Have you ever seen this notification: “Are you really sure you want to purge this data?” The number of clients who have actually utilized this function in Dydacomp’s Multichannel Order Manager is very small. In my experience, most of our customers here at Dydacomp have NEVER purged data (such as old customer correspondence, warehouse activity, inventory transactions, and telemarketing entries). The one type of data we think you should save is customer data as it is important to have comprehensive knowledge of your customer base. I have worked with long time M.O.M. customers who have had information archived since the late 90s, and it was affecting the speed of their M.O.M. systems. The idea of permanently removing data from any M.O.M. system can cause a slight panic in any user, but in reality, by purging data you will actually help improve M.O.M.’s functionality.
By archiving old data your M.O.M. will have a slower processing speed, as it takes longer to filter through the large amount of saved data. Achieving old data also takes up much needed space in your database. Tables have a 2G limit per file so purging old data will help avoid reaching this limit. Any orders past the last 10 years for customers are no longer necessary to save in your current M.O.M. database so I would recommend purging these orders first. Once you get comfortable with the idea of purging data, I recommend you move on to purging quotes, old correspondences (letters/labels), telemarketing entries, supplier invoices, purchase orders, inventory transactions. It will be worth the increase in processing speed!
Remember to backup your M.O.M. system prior to purging. If you make a backup of your M.O.M. system and save it to your server prior to purging data, you will be able to access the information at a later date. This backup will allow you to access all the customer data from before the purge so technically you won’t be losing any information, rather moving it to another location on your server. This should make it easier for you to purge unnecessary information. Check out this blog to learn how to backup your M.O.M. software.
Take my recommendation and purge old data today to help improve the processing speed of your M.O.M. system today!
